Angelo Mangiarotti

1921−2012, Milan

Biography

An Italian architect and designer, he was one of the key figures of post-war modernism. He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan. In the 1950s, he worked in the USA, where he became acquainted with industrial construction methods that influenced his later practice. Mangiarotti worked in architecture, industrial, and product design. His approach is based on exploring the constructive possibilities of materials—stone, glass, metal—and principles of assembly, often without the use of fasteners. Many of his objects are built on the idea of modularity and precise connection of parts. He collaborated with a number of Italian and international companies, creating furniture, lighting, and architectural solutions. Mangiarotti’s works are distinguished by engineering precision and expressive simplicity of form.
