Evgenia Malygina
1970, Krasnodar
Biography
A contemporary Russian artist whose work represents a deep exploration of space, time, and perception.
At 17, she moved to Saint Petersburg, a city that became her creative home. In 2003, Zhenya graduated from the Saint Petersburg State Academy of Art and Design, receiving a classical art education. The artist is known as the author and designer of the iconic Saint Petersburg clothing brand Pirosmani Studio, reflecting her multifaceted approach to aesthetics and form.
Her primary medium is large-scale painting. The artist’s creative method involves creating a "concentration of reality" through complete immersion of the viewer in the artistic space. The technique Zhenya employs is a meticulous, almost ritualistic process. Each painting is the result of long months of work. The artist applies numerous layers of paint—from transparent glazes to dense, textured strokes. Dried layers are rewritten again and again until the illusion of bottomless depth is achieved, into which one can literally "enter." As a result of creating a painting, a unique "space of vibration" emerges, which directly affects the viewer’s perception. The paintings are filled with boundless awe—this is the emotional message of the artist, whose task is to use art to expand the boundaries of one’s own "self."
In her work, Zhenya Malygina explores fundamental human states—vulnerability and loneliness—transforming them through painting into an experience of communion and deep aesthetic experience.
Examples of clothing from the Pirosmani Studio collection are held in the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
She lives and works in Saint Petersburg.
