Gianfranco Frattini

1926−2004, Padua

Biography

An Italian architect and designer, a representative of post-war modernism and one of the key figures in shaping Italian product design in the second half of the 20th century. He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he studied under Gio Ponti. In the 1950s, he began collaborating with Cesare Cassina, marking the starting point of his career in industrial design. Frattini worked at the intersection of architecture and product design, creating furniture, lighting, and interior solutions. His approach is based on functionality, modularity, and attention to materials—primarily wood, with which he experimented throughout his career. Many of his projects are built on the principles of transformation and variability of use. The designer collaborated with leading Italian companies, including Cassina, Artemide, and Bernini. His works have become part of the history of Italian design and continue to be reissued.
