Gio Ponti

1891−1979, Milan

Biography

An Italian architect, designer, and theorist, he was one of the central figures of Italian modernism in the 20th century. He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan. In the 1920s and 30s, he began collaborating with the Richard-Ginori company, where he focused on artistic direction and the development of decorative arts. Ponti worked on various scales—from architecture and interior design to furniture, lighting, and industrial design. His projects combine structural lightness, graphic lines, and attention to craftsmanship traditions. He aimed to create a modern environment where architecture and product design form a cohesive whole. Among his key architectural projects are the Pirelli skyscraper in Milan (in collaboration with Pier Luigi Nervi) and numerous private and public buildings in Italy and abroad. In 1928, Ponti founded the magazine Domus, which became one of the main platforms for discussing architecture and design.
