Saule Madiyeva

Almaty, Kazakhstan

Biography

Madiyeva’s canvases invite viewers to touch, where contact with the artwork becomes a metaphor for the circulation of energy. "In the process of working, I often cover myself with my canvases like a blanket, feeling the exchange of energy between myself and my works," says the artist. In all her works, Saule Madiyeva creates a personal life-affirming manifesto, as if awakening life in the canvases and conveying a sense of breath.

Felt is traditionally an integral part of Kazakh culture, believed to possess healing properties. This natural material is used to create yurts (the dwellings of Kazakh nomads), carpets, and other household items that have both functional and sacred significance.

For Saule, felt has become not only a part of the continuity of cultural tradition but also a way of interpreting personal experience, a symbol of the triumph of life, art, and victory over a terrible illness.

Having overcome breast cancer, the artist transformed this experience into one of the key images, addressing the theme of sensuality, femininity, and reinterpreting the symbol of motherhood. Bodily forms, smoothly flowing into the landscape, also refer to one of the main narratives in Kazakh mythology — the story of a place where the earth has curdled like milk, and time has stopped forever.
